Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol stuns Filippo Volandri in the quarter-finals – Madrid Challenger 2012 CH 
Top seeded, Filippo Volandri, received a straight sets shocker, 6-4, 6-1, at the hands of the local rival, Sergio Gutierrez- Ferrol, at the Madrid Challenger 2012 held at the courts of Spain. The Spanish collected
his win in nearly one hour and 15 minutes on the eve of Friday.
The 23-year-old Ferrol confidently held his initial serve in the opener and marked his lead in the fourth game by 3-1. However, the higher-ranked Italian challenger responded back and evened out the scores to
3-all by the end of the sixth game. Regardless of Volandri’s excellent run of form this season, he was unable to combat the Spaniard and aimlessly wondered, concluding the initial set with a 4-6 astonishing loss.
Ranked 192nd in the ATP World Tour Rankings, Ferrol, had 62 percent initial serve accuracy, converting 17 of 28 first and seven of 17 of second delivery points. He was only able to clinch three of
seven serve breaks and Filippo secured just two of nine. The Italian veteran had 79 percent initial serve precision, winning 17 of 31 first and two of eight second delivery points.
In the second set, both the players originated a weak start as they unable to hold their initial serves. The Spanish right-hander maintained his focus and progressed with a strong resolve to win. He did not let
Volandri hold his serve the entire time in the set and was resultantly he was unable to clinch any points. In comparison to that, he successively pocketed away all the remaining games without facing any resistance and stamped the match closure with a 6-1 win.
The 23-year-old Spaniard had an average initial serve accuracy of 70 percent but could only nine of 14 first and five of six second delivery points. The Italian senior had an outstanding score of 91 percent initial
serve precision converting seven of 20 first and one of two second serve points. He won just one of the two break points, whereas local challenger snatched all the three.
The right-hander Spanish will contest against the fourth seeded compatriot, Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Previously, he battled in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 against the eighth seeded, Federico Delbonis.
