Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol upsets Federico Delbonis in round one – Copa Sevilla 2012 CH
Local challenger, Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol, stunned the third seed, Federico Delbonis, in opening round at the Copa Sevilla 2012 on Monday. He jolted down a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the Azul native to power into the second round at this ATP (Association of
Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event held in Seville, Spain.
With help from his home crowd, Gutierrez-Ferrol outshined the left-handed Argentine in one hour and eight minutes. Battling each other for the first time, the Spaniard comfortably advanced into the round of 16 at this outdoor clay court event.
The 23-year-old thundered into the Real Club de Tenis Betis. He drew the first blood in the opening game and took the initial lead. The Spaniard easily plucked his entire serves without facing any hindrance and capitalised on another break chance in the
seventh game, eventually sealing the opener by winning six games to two.
Ranked 195th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Gutierrez-Ferrol went out of control in the following set. He stroke out the opening four games in a row before Delbonis could hold on. The Spaniard held his remaining serves and
clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
Summing up the Spaniard’s performance, Gutierrez-Ferrol showed brilliant defensive skills to keep his entire serves. He brushed off all four breakpoints he came across and converted four out of nine break chances to his advantage. The lower ranked contender
smacked six aces and finished the match with 67 points. He produced a lower first serve share of 62 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 73 per cent and amazingly marked 25 out of 33 points on it.
Next up for Gutierrez-Ferrol is the German challenger, Jan-Lennard Struff. The German crushed the local wild card entrant, David Vega Hernandez, with a breadstick to set up this meeting.
Germany’s Nils Langer will accompany the Spaniard in the second round. He notched up a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Canada’s Steven Diez in one hour and 43 minutes. Langer lost his serve twice but cashed in all five break chances to earn the glory. He produced
a better first serve share and amazingly availed 24 out of 34 points on it.
