Sergio Martinez: I knew Macklin would lose – Boxing News
Sergio Martinez went head to head with Matthew Macklin at the Theatre in New York’s Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. Sergio Martinez won the fight by an 11th round knockout and unfortunately the challenger Matthew Macklin, who was highly
confident of knocking out Martinez, fell.
The fight was an epic battle between two top-notch fighters which saw the World middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on a slump initially. However, out of nowhere Martinez made a comeback after suffering a 7th round controversial knockout. Martinez,
commenting on the bout said, “It was a complicated fight. He (Macklin) wasn’t open on defense. I knew it was a 12-round fight. I knew that it was only a matter of time. It’s like chopping a tree – little by little – and I knew he would fall.”
On the other hand, Matthew ‘Mack the Knife’, who suffered a come-from-behind knockout, stated, “Buddy (his trainer) stopped the fight. I wanted to continue.”
Macklin, like most fighters, did not admit the fact that Martinez was better than him. Even though during the initial seven rounds Macklin dominated Martinez, it was just by the end of the game that Martinez got the chance to bounce back. If the fight had
ended on a decision by the judges, Macklin would have won for sure since Martinez was losing on all three cards. Call it luck for Martinez or irony for Macklin, the truth is that Macklin’s claims of being stronger than Martinez were all washed away.
Brian Peters, Macklin’s promoter, iterated, “We called it in the corner. There are more days.”
Before the bout, Macklin was extremely sure-footed that he can beat Martinez. On Friday, Macklin commented, “I can make him fight. I’m the bigger and stronger fighter. I don’t believe Martinez can cope with the intensity and burning desire that I will bring
into that ring with me.”
By then, most analysts were of the view that Macklin will win, however what happened during the fight took everyone by surprise. Probably Macklin will get a rematch against Martinez to prove his mettle once again. The only thing Macklin needs to boost up
is his resilience if he wants to beat Martinez.
