Sergio Martinez challenges Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Boxing News
Argentinean fighter Sergio Martinez wants to go head to head with undefeated American fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. Martinez, who recently defeated WBC middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, believes he can defeat the WBC champion.
“Floyd, you be ready because I am going to find you in 2013. From here to November of 2013, I am going to find you,” said Martinez recently.
After his victory over Chavez, it seems like Martinez is on the way to end most fighters’ unbeaten track. He defeated Chavez via unanimous decision on September 15 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Martinez is ranked as the third best pound for pound fighter by Ring Magazine. He received ‘Fighter of the Year’ award in 2010 and he now owns the WBC middleweight title. He is was once a professional cyclist and a soccer player.
Right now, Martinez is struggling with a broken left hand, an injury that occurred during his fight with Chavez. According to his adviser Sampson Lewkowicz, the doctors have asked the fighter to go for another MRI or some tests to decide what should be his
treatment.
“They did MRI on Monday and the doctor that takes care of Sergio told him he needs another test or another MRI so he can decide if he needs the operation or if he can just go through treatment and rehabilitation. Rehab without surgery is a possibility. They
will make that decision next week when they get the results of the test,” said Sampson Lewkowicz.
Since Mayweather is the top pound for pound fighter in the world today with an unbeaten streak of 45 fights, every other fighter eyes him. Martinez is a world class fighter with abilities that can defeat Mayweather. His fight against Chavez showed his courage
and endurance, even though he was beaten harshly by Chavez in the ending rounds.
Mayweather is currently looking forward to a match with former WBO welterweight titlist Manny Pacquiao. Speculations suggest that both the fighters will collide next year in April but nothing is for sure yet.
If not Pacquiao, then Mayweather can probably go for Martinez, to ensure his dominance in the division.
