Sergio Martinez considers Manny Pacquiao, says he wants to be the best
Move over Pacquiao and Mayweather.
There a new candidate in town for pound-for-pound.
Following his spectacular second round knockout of Paul “The Punisher” Williams on the weekend, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez has stopped by On the Ropes Boxing Radio to comment on his performance and upcoming
plans.
“My ultimate goal is to become pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world today,” Martinez said without hesitation.
Martinez admitted he was surprised by the single punch that knocked Williams out, but said that he had worked on it in the gym. He indicated that it found its mark twice in the first round, and he knew
it was only a matter of time till he hit Williams squarely and sent him spinning.
With Martinez’s win, the boxing community has been dizzy trying to pit him with future opponents. The fight that many would like to see is Martinez and Manny Pacquiao, though it would involve much negotiating
to determine weight and terms.
When asked about the possibility of a bout with Pacquiao, Martinez said cryptically: “You know what, it would be a great fight. It would be a great fight for the boxing fans. There would have to be a lot
of negotiating for that fight. I don’t know if it will happen or not. You know I’m a bigger fighter. I’m a stronger fighter than Pacquiao and he would be the smaller opponent.”
Cecilio Flores, Martinez’s conditioning coach, stepped in and confirmed that if need be Martinez can fight at either middleweight (160lb) or junior middleweight (154lb) if it meant securing a bout with
“Pacman.”
Pacquiao’s last bout, against Antonio Margarito, was held at the catchweight of 150 pounds. While the fight was for the 154-WBC crown, Pacquiao weighed in at only 144.6 pounds, indicating how small he
is and how difficult it is to put on weight.
Martinez left the studio with a bang, stating: “I’m going to bring the sport to the next level.”
