Sergio Martinez deeply saddened over Paul Williams’ accident – Boxing News
UFC’s Sergio Martinez, the hot favourite of New York City, has come forward to share his thoughts regarding Paul Williams’ accident past Sunday. Sergio Martinez was scheduled to face Williams on September 15 in Las Vegas, but now the fight has been cancelled.
Williams’ devastating bike accident has left him with a paralysed lower body. According to doctors, Williams might not be able to walk ever again in his life but the pugilist is still confident that he will overcome the obstacles and be back on his feet.
Sergio released his statements, sympathising Williams for what happened. He said, “Upon learning of Paul's injuries, I was deeply saddened. When you are in the ring with a real champion, you know it, and Paul Williams was a very great champion, in every
sense of the word. Paul and his family are in my thoughts and prayers through this very difficult time.”
Williams, former two-time WBO welterweight champion, met the accident on Sunday in the suburbs of Atlanta. Williams, who was in the area to attend his brother’s wedding ceremony, was on his bike when he hit a car after trying to save himself from the other.
Williams was soon taken to an Atlanta based hospital where doctors determined that his lower has been paralysed but his upper body is stable.
On the tragic incident, Williams’ manager George Peterson said that the pugilist is currently paralysed from waist under but he is in high spirits that he will recover soon. According to Peterson, Williams still believes that he will be able to fight again.
Peterson added that Williams has a strong willpower and he wants to be on the bike again once he recovers.
According to Peterson, Williams is the kind of person who will get back on his feet and would want to enter the ring to fight again. Peterson pledged Williams’ fans to stay patient, as the pugilist will return soon to the ring.
For now, doctors are certain that the boxer will not be able to walk again but his well-wishers believe he can cross the obstacles and be himself once again.
