Sergio Martinez defends his gold against Matthew Macklin in 12-round bout – Boxing news
Sergio Gabriel Martinez, the current WBC Diamond middleweight title holder, will defend his prestigious gold in a 12-round bout against the former EBU (European) middleweight champion Matthew Macklin, on Saturday March 17, 2012 and will prove that he is
still the number one unanimous middleweight in the world.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment and the whole event will be televised on HBO’s Saturday night show ‘World Championship Boxing’. The ring will be stretched at Madison Square Garden situated
in New York, United States.
Sergio is considered as one of the best middleweights in the world who has attained much respect in the sport of boxing. All the analysts, critics and boxing fanatics worldwide know this fact very well that Sergio is the best pound-for-pound middleweight
who rules the division emphatically.
Sergio has been in a total 52 bouts and came out victorious in 48. He has collected 27 of his bouts by knockout and has lost just two bouts, one to Paul Williams and the other to Antonio Margarito.
Matthew, on the other hand, is a young surging Briton who has been in a total 31 bouts and came out victorious in 28. He has collected 19 of his wins by knockout and is ranked number one in his home country.
Macklin, infamous as ‘The Knife’, recently clashed with Felix Strum for the WBA super world middleweight title but unfortunately lost the bout via split decision. Matthew stands no chance in front of Sergio in various brawling departments.
Sergio has a 191cm reach as compared to Macklin’s 183cm. In addition, Sergio has experience of nailing almost all the world middleweights. Moreover, the Argentinean is a southpaw and Mack the Knife follows an altogether opposite orthodox stance.
Macklin recently exhibited his tendency of losing the bout to ace middleweights and this aspect might hinder him from collecting a win against Sergio. It must be noted that Felix is the world number five middleweight and Mack, who secures 11th rank was unable
to nail him.
The duo, during the pre-bout press conference, was excited at being part of HBO’s apex boxing show. Martinez commented, “It has been a dream my whole life to fight in the mecca of boxing, Madison Square Garden. I've thought about fighting here for so many
years.”
Mack while praising Sergio remarked confidently that he will give a tough time to the veteran Maravilla and said, “Sergio is the real middleweight champion and if you want to be the best you have to beat the best. I’m glad the opportunity came about. He’s
37 now and on Saturday night, he’s going to feel every single day of those 37 years. And there’ll be a new middleweight champion.”
The pay-per-view will be co-headlined by the 10-round non-title bout between Edwin Rodriguez and Donovan George. The battle between Martinez and Macklin will be epic and might get a chance to be the ‘fight of the year’ award recipient.
