Sergio Martinez puts offer on the table for Manny Pacquiao
Sergio Martinez is willing to take on Manny Pacquiao if “Pacman” is up for the challenge.
Appearing on On the Ropes Boxing Radio recently, Martinez was hesitant about fighting Pacquiao, indicating that the Philippine congressman was simply too small for him.
But now “Maravilla” has changed his tune.
Martinez, who holds the WBC middleweight crown and regularly weighs upwards of 170 pounds when he isn’t training, said he would be willing to fight Pacquiao at 154 pounds (junior middleweight) if necessary.
"If Manny is willing to defend his WBC super welterweight title, I would come down to 154 pounds to challenge him for it as well as allow him to challenge me for my WBC middleweight title," Martinez said in an eastsideboxing.com article.
“It would be the opportunity of a lifetime. But I'm a realist and if he feels that he is physically too small to fight me I certainly understand that too."
Pacquiao fought his last fight at 150 pounds, his heaviest weight yet. Though he fought and defeated opponent Antonio Margarito for the 154-WBC title, weight problems were apparent for the majority of training camp.
In fact, “Pacman” didn’t even make weight for Margarito, weighing in at a slim 144.6 pounds.
When asked by eastsideboxing.com who was the mythical best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Martinez’s trainer Lou Dibella likewise said: ““In my opinion a valid argument can be made for all three [Martinez, Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather] so let’s just
number them 1A, 1B and 1C.”
“But I sure would like to see them prove who the best is inside the ring and Sergio is ready to concede his weight advantage to do it."
Last weekend Martinez earned the praise of many with a stunning second round knock-out of Paul “The Punisher” Williams. The fight was expected to mirror their first epic battle and go the distance.
