Sergio Martinez to defend middleweight title against Darren Barker – Boxing news
Boxing promoter Lou DiBella while speaking to the press revealed that the Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is going to make his third title defence against the British national Darren Barker on October 1, 2011.
The venue of the fight is still not decided, however the possible sites in view are Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Las Vegas or the Dallas-Forth Worth area of Texas.
DiBella and Barker’s promoter Eddie Hearn met on Monday to talk about the possibilities of the bout.
DiBella commented, “I've known Eddie since he was 11. Easy to make the deal, they've wanted the fight and Sergio is willing to fight anyone. Barker has been calling out Sergio and he's a pleasing TV fighter. He'll come at Sergio and I think it will be an
exciting fight, and there will be a lot of international interest, especially in the U.K. Barker's never been beaten and he's popular in England. He'll have more people travel to the U.S. for this fight than travel here for (British world titleholders) Carl
Froch or Amir Khan Fights.”
According to the press release, DiBella is very much up to the fight to make it possible. He is trying to finalise the deal with HBO in an effort to broadcast the fight.
There has been a lot of fight talk before that to choose the possible opponent for the world’s second best pound-for-pound contender Martinez. The Sergio fight was offered to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Daniel Geale, Miguel Cotto, Andy Lee and Paul Williams
but the negotiations could not materialise.
Martinez talking about his opponent said that the only thing that cannot be hidden from Barker is that he was very brave. He said he was facing an undefeated prospect but he was not scared about it. He further expressed his disappointment at not being able
to win his bout against Cotto.
Hopefully, the competition between the two fighters will be interesting and competitive one for boxing fans when the two fighters will be standing face to face in October.
