Sergio Martinez undergoes surgery to repair right knee and ankle – Boxing News
Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez underwent a surgery o repair his right ankle and knee, which were injured during his title fight against WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Martinez defeated Julio Cesar Chavez to become the WBC middleweight
champion. He fought half of the fight with a broken left arm, and later on with an injured knee and ankle.
Martinez went through the surgery in Spain. The Argentinean fighter has been living in Spain since the very start of his career. The operation was carried out by Villamor Perez, King of Spain Juan Carlos I’s personal physician.
“I am very, very happy with how the operation went,” said Martinez.
“I will be rehabbing for two or so weeks and then I will be back in the gym, and begin preparations for my next title defense, which will take place next year in my native Argentina. This will be my first fight there in many years and I am really looking
forward to defending my title in front of all of my great fans in Argentina.”
Promoter Lou DiBella commented on Martinez’s surgery saying, “We are very pleased that Sergio’s surgery today was successful with no complications. He’ll be back on his feet in a few weeks and able to train shortly thereafter.”
According to Martinez’s business manager Miguel Angel de Pablos, the operation was perfect and that Perez did an excellent job. He added that they could not have been happier with the result of the operations. When asked about Martinez’s recovery, Pablos
added that the Argentinean fighter will start working with his personal doctor Raquel Bordons on his rehabilitation and will be back in the gym soon.
For now, Martinez is recovering from the operation. Once good, he will move to rehabilitation and then finally back to the gym. The current WBC middleweight titlist is being eyed for a match against WBC welterweight titlist Floyd Mayweather Jr. If Martinez
gets a fight against Mayweather, he probably will have the chance to end the unbeaten American’s legacy as the best pound for pound fighter in the world once and for all.
