Sergio Perez admits he is disappointed over his second place finish – Formula 1 news
Sergio Perez says in somewhat disappointment over his lost chance of a maiden victory that it could have been him at the top.
Perez surprised everyone on Sunday with the way he drove his Sauber, he was relentless in his ambition to overtake race leader Fernando Alonso.
Perez got the best opportunity in the final stages of the race, there were six more laps left and at turn 13 the Mexican got the chance to overtake Alonso but a mistake by the driver caused the car to slid and lead turned up to almost 5 seconds.
The team radioed Perez not to lose his second place finish which was very important to the team. Perez still managed to catch up to the Ferrari and managed to finish the race almost 3 seconds behind.
It was a spectacular show of skill from the Mexican, and will give a good boost to the team ahead in the season as they will now believe that they have the car to and the driver to compete with the leaders of the board and only the application is required.
“I was catching Fernando towards the end of the race,” Perez said. “I knew I had to get him soon because in the sectors with high speed corners I was already losing the front tyres with a lot of degradation going behind Fernando so it was not easy. Then
I ran wide in the left handed quick corner, I touched the kerb and I went on to the dirty side, it was completely wet and I lost the win probably. It was very difficult obviously to get Fernando but I think today the win was possible.”
The team looked very happy with the result and were in praise of Perez for the performance he conjured up.
Perez also said that the team did an incredible job and made the right calls for the pits stops. He added that he was very quick and could have had his first win, but he is still happy with a second place finish and will be gunning to improve in the next
race of the season.
