Sergio Perez believes Sauber will challenge for victories in 2013 – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Sergio Perez has said that Sauber are going to come up stronger in the 2013 Formula 1 season and will challenge for wins as there are no drastic changes in the rules and regulations.
The Hinwil based squad performed impressively well during the last season. They emerged as the most competent midfield contender and even challenged Mercedes towards the end of the season.
Perez, who raced for Sauber in 2012, secured three podiums and managed to earn a race seat at McLaren for 2013, expects that the Swiss team will be strong again in this season.
Furthermore, the Mexican driver believes that Sauber will be more competitive in this year because the rules are almost the same.
“They will be strong again,” Perez is quoted by Autosport. “The regulations don't change, so there's no reason for them not to be at a very competitive level.”
Besides, he said that Sauber will be fighting for victories in this season. In addition, he said that if the Swiss squad will be able to attain good results, he will be happy for them.
“I am sure they will have some races where they will be fighting for wins. If they get a good result, I will be happy for them. I would prefer them to have a good result than other teams [except McLaren],” he added.
It will be important to mention that Nico Hulkenberg, who also performed tremendously well with Force India during the preceding season, has replaced Perez at Sauber.
Hulkenberg has been considered as one of the most talented young drivers in the field. However, he has avoided making any kind of predictions for this year.
“I wouldn't talk about scoring podiums [with Sauber] at this point because it's too early,” Hulkenberg said. “Nobody knows where the cars are going to be next year.”
Nonetheless, he asserted that he sees great potential in his new team and is aiming to deliver his best in this season.
Let’s see how the German driver performs alongside Esteban Gutierrez in this season and whether he will be able to come up to the expectations of his team or not.
