Sergio Perez criticises Pirelli after tyre explosion incidents in Silverstone – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Sergio Perez has criticised Pirelli after the awful incidents of tyre explosion in the 2013 British Grand Prix and asserted that if the Italian company hadn’t taken any steps, the drivers would have done something.
Perez struggled a lot with his pace in the qualifying of at the Silverstone circuit and failed to make his way into the final session. Afterwards, he faced the tyre explosion issue in the race due to which he remained unable to score even a single point
for his team. He was not the only one who was encountered with the tyre problem as four other drivers also faced the same issue which raised the safety concerns for everyone in the sport.
Nevertheless, Pirelli have taken the required action to resolve the tyre issue and to make the compound stronger ahead of the German GP which is to be held at Nurburgring this weekend. The Mexican driver said that if the Italian tyre company hadn’t taken
any actions in this regard, the drivers would have called a strike at Nurburgring because their lives were at risk.
“I think if Pirelli had not changed the construction, for sure we would have done something as drivers,” he said. “We were risking our lives and at the end of the day this is a sport and you don't want to be risking your lives. I can't imagine if you have
22 drivers knowing that something as bad as a tyre exploding could happen, I don't think all of us would have gone out and raced. I believe that myself.”
“It was not nice,” he added. “We were risking our lives at a circuit like Silverstone and at any circuit. You don't feel comfortable.”
The 23-year-old has only been able to score 12 points in the season so far and is currently standing at 13th place in the drivers’ championship. In addition, he is ahead of Daniel Ricciardo of Toro Rosso and behind Jean-Eric Vergne. Moreover, he is 13 points
behind his teammate, Jenson Button who is standing at 10th place in the drivers’ championship at the moment.
Let’s see how he performs in the approaching race.
