Sergio Perez disappointed over McLaren’s form – Formula 1 news
Sergio Perez has expressed disappointment over McLaren’s form in the 2013 Formula 1 season. He left Sauber last year and was confident that he would be fighting for the title with his new team.
However, things have gone absolutely wrong for the Mexican driver and he hardly gets a chance to fight for points let alone podiums.
Although the British squad has the resources to catch up with their rivals, Perez sees no hope whatsoever.
He said, “There is nothing that can save us; not rain, not a miracle. It’s not the year I wanted. Last year, at this time, I had more points (at Sauber). The (McLaren) car has so many problems, and we are so far behind that there is not a single issue that
we can focus on.”
Other than the frustration of being unable to deliver strong results, the young Mexican has been criticised widely by the rival drivers for being overly optimistic in certain situations like Monaco, where he had a collision with Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen.
When asked about all the criticism, Perez said, “I’m not in Formula 1 to not be criticised, or to please everyone. I’m in Formula 1 to fight for my team. If that attracts criticism for me, then I don’t care.”
The 2012 season proved to be a very good one for 23-year-old driver, as he scored 66 points in the Drivers’ Championship and finished 10th overall. He managed to score three podiums, which was highly impressive. Although his best result was a second place
in Malaysia, he almost managed to win that race until making a mistake in the final moments, which prevented him from doing so.
This year, the situation seems to be out of control for Perez, who might end up outside the top-10 in the championship. He is not the only one suffering though, as the entire team has been disappointed with the lack of speed this year.
McLaren were expected to be fighting for victories this year and their lead driver Jenson Button was rated as one of the favourites to claim the title. However, the current situation suggests that he will not even finish on the podium even once in 2013.
