Sergio Perez drives his Sauber on the streets of his hometown Guadalajara – Formula 1 news
Sauber’s Sergio Perez drove his new Sauber car on the streets of his hometown Guadalajara in front of a crowd of around 200,000 people lining the streets.
He gave a demonstration of his new Sauber and the public adored every moment of it.
Perez drove for about 1.5 kilometres on closed public roads for a total of eight times. He drove up and down on the roads and did “donuts” in order to entertain the crowd by getting his car’s tyres to smoke.
“This was one of the best days of my life. It was a great, great experience. I have never experienced something like this before with so many people cheering me,” said Perez after giving dozens of interviews and signing countless autographs.
A NASCAR show followed this ultimate display of entertainment by a Formula 1 car and the show also involved Sergio’s brother Antonio Perez along with a couple of bike shows, parades involving the police and vintage cars.
“It was an enormous event with unbelievable enthusiasm. What the state of Jalisco managed to put on within a very short space of time was one of the greatest F1 road shows I have ever looked after,” said Beat Zehnder, the team’s manager.
However, it is expected that the team is trying its best to produce a better car this year as the 2010 Formula 1 season was quite disappointing for the team in general. The team was unable to give a good statistical performance as the team finished in 8th
place in the constructors’ standings.
However, the team has produced a driver like Kamui Kobayashi who is going to be a part of the team in the 2011 Formula 1 season as well. The team is quite hopeful that they will give a much better performance in 2011 than they did in 2010.
Kamui finished in 12th place in the drivers’ standings in 2010 and also won the best young driver’s award for the year.
Nevertheless, the team is expecting similar results from Sergio and it seems that the young Mexican is quite pumped up and he believes that he is ready to race for Sauber and produce good results for them this season.
“I'm proud to be Mexican, and I'm proud to receive all this support. It is a big boost for me ahead of the new season,” said Perez.
It would be interesting to see how Sauber performs in 2011 and since there are a lot of new drivers are going to debut their respective Formula 1 careers in 2011, it would be interesting to see which newcomer performs the best statistically this season as
their future would definitely be affected by this year’s performance.
