Sergio Perez hopes to drive for Ferrari one day
Team Sauber new driver, Sergio Perez stated that he dreams of driving for Team Ferrari one day, shortly after his team revealed its new car, “C30,” for the 2011 Formula 1 season. The season will mark the driver’s debut appearance in the highest ranked auto
series of the world.
Sergio replaced Nick Heidfeld as the team’s full season driver alongside Kamui Kobayashi, and it seems that Perez is determined not disappoint his team by giving consistent performances.
Kamui Kobayashi had an average season with the team as he finished at 12th spot in the drivers’ standings after scoring 32 points. On the other hand, neither Pedro de la Rosa nor Nick was able to score points consistently during their respective
times in the team.
However, since Ferrari supplies engines and gearboxes for Sauber, Perez recently became a part of Ferrari’s Young Driver Development Programme, and it is believed that he might be linked with the team.
“I know I have to do well at Sauber to keep growing up in Formula One, but for the future I don't know what is going to happen. Obviously the dream is to one day drive for Ferrari, but now I'm at Sauber and I'm very proud to be working with such a team as
them in my first season,” said the Mexican driver.
Perez is the first Mexican driver to take part in Formula 1 in the last 30 years, following Hector Rebaque, who retired from the sport in 1981.
Team Sauber faced huge problems in 2010; they even had to drive a “sponsor-less” car halfway through the season. Since Perez is now a part of the team, it seems that the team is going to use 5 Mexican sponsors on their new car.
“I have received big support from Mexico, because the country has waited a long time - 30 years - since there was last a Mexican in Formula One. The country is very excited. All the people there follow me and every single detail of Formula One, so they are
very much into F1 now,” said Sergio.
Perez must prove himself and show the world that he has the ability to come up with consistent performance whether he is driving a good car or not, in order to secure a promising future in Formula 1. It will be interesting to see how he performs in his C30
with new tyre compounds by Pirelli.
