Sergio Perez hoping that McLaren will be able to beat Red Bull Racing – Formula 1 news
Newly signed driver for McLaren-Mercedes team, Sergio Perez is hopeful of the fact that they will be able to beat pacesetters Red Bull Racing come the 2013 Formula 1 season.
Perez was snapped up by the McLaren team as a replacement for the outgoing Lewis Hamilton after the Brit announced his commitment to the Mercedes factory team. Perez impressed in the 2012 Formula 1 season as he managed three podium finishes with the Sauber
team.
At the front of the grid though, Red Bull Racing and McLaren battled it out throughout the 2012 season. Red Bull Racing became the eventual constructors’ champions and McLaren suffered due to reliability issues and were therefore not able to challenge the
Bulls.
“I think we have got a strong base, a strong team and the people are very motivated to go for it so I am very happy in that respect,” he said.
Perez however, is now of the opinion that they will be more competitive in the 2013 season and will manage to overtake the Milton-Keynes-based squad.
“I think this team is capable of moving ahead,” Perez said. “We've seen in previous years when in testing they are so far away and then they come in to the first race and they qualify on the front row. So I think this is a team that really can deliver from
day to night something very special. And I think that this team is so special and so much motivated to win that I'm not worried at all.”
Although McLaren were able to show some decent qualifying pace, they could not manage to do the same in the races. Red Bull Racing were able to outgun the Woking-based squad thanks largely due to some amazing performances by Sebastian Vettel who won four
races back to back to win the drivers’ championship for the third consecutive time in his career.
Perez now has had the taste of his McLaren team and it will be interesting to see how the young Mexican fits into the squad when the first pre-season test gets underway in February.
