Sergio Perez insists that McLaren deal has not derailed his focus – Formula 1 news
Sergio Perez, who currently drives for Sauber F1, insists that his future seat with McLaren has not derailed his focus as the driver has failed to bring good results in recent races.
The driver has been under speculation after he has been performing poorly ever since his confirmation with McLaren ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. During the race in Japan, Perez’s car suffered as he was trying to pass Lewis Hamilton who he will be replacing
at McLaren. Hamilton slammed the event as a ‘crazy manoeuvre’. He also failed to score any points in the Korean and Indian Grands Prix.
However, Perez has denied that he is distracted admitting that he is in fact more focused as he is not worried about his future anymore.
“For sure [the slump in results] is just a coincidence,” Perez said. “The people in my team know what's going on and they are the only people that worry me at the moment. I'm fully focused and if the results have not come it's because there is some reason
for that. I just want to give my best and it's normal that people start to make up stories that I am not doing very well because of the McLaren deal or whatever, but it's not true and it's not right.”
The driver added that all the criticism does not affect him but it causes frustration for his team that works really hard with him. The team principal for McLaren, Martin Whitmarsh, also admitted that he is not worried about this lack of performance and
does not regret the team’s decision on hiring him. He says that the driver is still young and in learning process which is actually a good thing. He is also pushing for the team to earn some time with Perez before the current season ends.
Perez is very hopeful about working with McLaren and is even looking forward to achieving the championship next year. However, he thinks that Hamilton is a very good driver which makes it difficult to meet the standards that he has set with McLaren so he
is ready to give his best.
