Sergio Perez is certain about having an equal status at the McLaren team – Formula 1 news
Sergio Perez, who currently drives for Sauber F1, will be moving to McLaren for next year’s driver line up and is sure that he will be given an equal status with future teammate Jenson Button.
Perez will be replacing Lewis Hamilton who is the main driver for McLaren at present. With him leaving, the focus will be shifting to Button as he will become the older and more experienced driver in the team. However, Martin Whitmarsh, the team principal
for the team, has assured the new comer that there will be no indifference.
“The first time I spoke with Martin he told me the team is for both drivers and I will clearly have the same as the other driver next to me,” Perez told reporters in Abu Dhabi. “I fully trust Martin and I trust the whole team as well.”
Perez is also hopeful about working with his new teammate as he expects to learn new things from him.
“Jenson has a lot of experience with the team at the moment, so I think I have to work a lot with him to build my relationship with the team and my understanding of the car. He will be an important part of that,” he said.
On the other hand, Button does not feel that he is about to play a role of ‘older brother’ to Perez despite him having a ten year age difference with him. However, he is adamant about working closely with him come next season. He thinks that an older driver
can also rely on a younger one in hope of fresh ideas.
Perez is mainly focused on proving that he can do his job right for the new team. He believes that he is about to become the part of a strong team and will be achieving good things with them. The driver has been under speculation about not performing well
since his deal confirmation but he denies that being the case. Whitmarsh has also backed the driver stating that he is in learning process.
Perez has expressed his respect for outgoing Hamilton and is hopeful of meeting his standards.
