Sergio Perez keeps himself grounded as he targets championship in next two years – Formula 1
Sergio Perez says that he hopes to be championship winner in the next two years.
Perez shocked the F1 world as he drove at the Malaysian Grand Prix with skill and heart to finish a narrow second to Fernando Alonso.
Sergio ended a 41-year drought for the Mexico by winning the Malaysian GP and now has his eyes set on a championship. Since his performance, speculations of him linking with Ferrari have been rife although both Perez and Ferrari have denied any such speculations.
While Perez is being linked with Ferrari, Felipe Massa, the Ferrari driver has been under tremendous pressure to perform in the season to retain his race seat with the team. Although Ferrari has come out in support of the Brazilian but it is getting clearer
with each passing race that Massa’s tenure with Ferrari is coming to its end.
Perez explained that he wants to stick with Sauber for the time being and really prove to himself and the world that he is capable enough to be amongst the best.
“In the future my goal is to be in a big team and to be fighting for victories,” he told NDTV. “The most important thing is having a car that gives me the chance to win races. I believe that in two or three years I will be fighting for the world championship.”
Some have even went far enough to compare the Mexican with the great Ayrton Senna but Perez has not let such comparisons pollute his mind and said that people should not be carried away by his performance. He wants to do well in every race but such comparisons
are not fair at this point of his career. He maintained that he has a lot more to do in the future and a lot more to prove.
“It makes me proud that people compare me to someone like Senna, but I've still got a lot to do in my career to receive that kind of praise,” Perez said.
It will be imperative for Perez to keep on performing as the season progresses to show that the Malaysian race was not a one off performance.
