Sergio Perez must prepare himself for 2013 – Formula 1
Sergio Perez has signed a new multi-year contract with McLaren and is going to drive alongside Jenson Button from the 2013 Formula 1 season onwards, therefore he must prepare himself to come up to the expectations of one of the most successful teams in the
world of the sport.
Perez impressed everyone with some of his amazing performances in this season and has been considered as one of the most talented drivers in the field.
After he claimed his first podium of the season in the Malaysian Grand Prix, he was surrounded by many speculations which stated that Ferrari were looking forward to replace their struggling driver, Felipe Massa with him.
However, the team principal of Ferrari, Stefano Domenicali completely discharged all the rumours and expressed that they are ready to support Massa in every aspect of the game.
On the other hand, the president of the Italian team, Luca di Montezemolo said that the Mexican driver has surely got some amazing talent and skills, but insisted that he is too young and needs to get more experience before joining their squad.
Nonetheless, the 22-year-old has successfully made his way to a big team after Lewis Hamilton’s move to Mercedes in the next season was confirmed.
It will be important to note that he failed to attain any points for Sauber after signing his new deal with the Woking based team and faced immense criticism over his poor form.
Meanwhile, the team principal of McLaren, Martin Whitmarsh said that Perez must know that he is going to join a top team in the next year where he will be under much more pressure, so he should make up his mind to perform well.
In addition, Button said that they will definitely face some difficulties with the new driver in the coming season, but they are not feeling upset and are positively looking forward to give him the necessary training.
Besides, the 2009 world champion admitted that they may struggle after the departure of Hamilton in the coming season as his compatriot is undoubtedly a great driver and has achieved so much in his career so far.
“Lewis is a guy who has won the world championship and had so many wins and races with this team,” Button said.
Nonetheless, he said that they have confidence in their decision and are aiming to prepare Perez for the next season.
“I've heard he's [Perez] intelligent too. I don't know if he will be up to it straight away. He is going to be spending a lot of time in the United Kingdom at the factory,” he said.
He also said that he cannot make any kind of predictions regarding the next season, but they are hoping to achieve promising results for their team.
“I have a feeling he will be competitive but of course he doesn't have the experience,” he added. “I don't think he will be fighting at the front at the start of next season but we might be surprised at the first race.”
McLaren have created a great legacy in the world of F1 and their decision to take Perez as Hamilton’s replacement seems to be quite immature. However, nothing can be said for sure and it will be exciting to see how they show up in the next season.
