Sergio Perez not looking to put any pressure on Ferrari for 2013 race seat – Formula 1 news
Sergio Perez has insisted that he will not be putting pressure on Ferrari to promote him by replacing him with Felipe Massa to partner Fernando Alonso.
Perez is driving for Sauber in the current season and has shown some promising performances in the season. He narrowly missed out on his maiden victory at Malaysian Grand Prix where he lost out to Alonso for a second place finish.
Perez is also part of Ferrari’s young driver academy and after his Malaysian performance was tipped to be the perfect candidate to replace Massa. Ferrari quickly said that Perez was too inexperienced to be part of Ferrari at the moment.
Mark Webber was speculated to be the strongest candidate to replace the Brazilian but the Aussie opted to stay with Red Bull for another year and renewed his contract with the team. Ferrari admitted that the team was in talks with Webber and now that the
Aussie has decided to go with Red Bull, they will have to rethink their possibilities for 2013’s driver line-up.
The 22-year-old has had a good relationship with Alonso which might benefit him when the decision is to be made whether the Mexican has done enough in the current season to earn a Ferrari race seat.
Ferrari has also admitted that in June the team had spoken to Perez over taming his aggression ahead of the Canadian GP. Perez went on to take his second podium of the season.
“No, none at all,” he said when asked if replacing Massa had been discussed. “We are focusing fully on this season. It has been a very busy season so far, so it is too soon for me to think about my future.”
“It's not [something] that I will push. I have to see what the options are and then I will decide. If there is an opportunity with them [Ferrari] or another team then that is the time to know. My target is to keep doing very good races and then I will decide
very soon what my future is going to be,” he added.
It will be interesting to see who partners up with Alonso for the 2013 season.
