Sergio Perez targets championship title in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Sauber driver Sergio Perez, who is going to join McLaren in 2013, has said that he is targeting to win the world championship title in his first season with the Woking based team.
Perez has performed incredibly well in the season so far and has secured three podium finishes. Moreover, he has been considered as one of the most talented young drivers in the sport and has successfully secured a new multi-year deal with the British squad.
He will drive as Jenson Button’s teammate from the next season onwards and will replace Lewis Hamilton who has decided to move to Mercedes in the coming year.
On the other hand, the seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher of the Brackley based team has planned to take retirement at the end of this season.
Even though, the Mexican driver has failed to score any points after signing his agreement with McLaren. Nevertheless, he is not feeling disappointed and is positively looking forward to claim the championship title in the next year with his new team.
Furthermore, he has asserted that his target is to score victories right from the start of the next season so as to win the title in the end.
“My target straight away is to win the World Championship,” he told CNN. “I need to get wins to do that. I know it will be very hard to win the championship, but it's the challenge I want.”
In addition, he said that he is well aware of the fact he will have more pressure on him in the coming season, but insisted that he will take it positively and will fight hard to attain competitive results for his team.
“For sure, I've got big shoes to fill. I rate him very highly and he's maybe the fastest out there. It's going to be tough to follow what he did,” he added.
Besides, the team principal of McLaren, Martin Whitmarsh has said that they will prepare the 22-year-old so that he may drive well in the next year.
It will be interesting to see how the youngster performs in the remaining two races of the ongoing season and how he shows up in the coming year.
