Sergio Ramos hails David Villa
Spain defender Sergio Ramos has praised striker David Villa after the Barcelona man became the country’s joint-highest goalscorer of all time.
When Scotland’s Steven Whittaker handled the ball during the sides’ UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying match on Tuesday, October 12, Villa stepped up to slot home the penalty beyond goalkeeper Allan McGregor and in the process, scored his
44th international goal.
As a result, the 28-year-old has moved alongside Raul Gonzalez Blanco (‘Raul’) as Spain’s leading scorer.
Real Madrid right-back Ramos could not contain his delight for Villa, and told reporters, "We can only congratulate him, because he has managed a significant figure. Villa will be one of the top scorers in the history of our selection and my only wish is
for him to remain [in] the roll for a long time."
Villa himself said that he was delighted with the strike which helped Spain to a 3-2 victory at Hampden Park, and is already looking ahead to claiming the record outright.
"I'm happy because my goal helped us win. We knew for a long time that this goal would arrive. Now the 45 mark does not worry me, because I will score many more."
Meanwhile, Ramos was pointed out that Spain, despite being world and European champions, still had improvements to make if they are to avoid the lapses in concentration which allowed Scotland to draw level after going two goals behind.
“The team are able to appreciate this moment. There are cycles in matches and I do not know why, but the team gets lost at some points. Scotland had been pressing very high and managed to trouble us, and press our defensive lines, and were able to take advantage
of that. We must learn from these moments, because you cannot always get the right results and that could complicate things."
