Sergio Rodriguez drains 20 points as Real Madrid down Gescrap BB 89-73 - Euroleague Recap
Real Madrid are one of the strongest contenders for the Euroleague title along with their Spanish rivals FC Barcelona Regal and reigning champions Panathinaikos.
Last week, they surprisingly faced a massive defeat at the hands of Montepaschi Siena in their second outing of the top 16, which hurt the team terribly. However, teams like Madrid have the ability to bounce back quickly and that
is exactly what they did on Wednesday night.
In what was their third scrimmage of the top 16, Madrid put up a solid performance and subdued Gescrap BB 89-73, to augment their record to 2-1.
Madrid played like real champions and dominated the proceedings right from the word go. After ending the first frame with a double-digit lead 26-16, they carried the momentum into the next and never at any instance gave Gescrap
a chance to completely comeback in the game.
The fate of the game was perhaps decided in the ninth minute of the second quarter, after Martynas Pocius drove a layup to boost the Madrid’s lead to 18 points 48-30.
Gescrap showed some urgency in the third frame by cutting the lead to single figures 55-48, but it was only short lived as Madrid were unstoppable and took only a few minutes to boost the lead back in to double figures.
Gescrap made yet another comeback in the opening minutes of the deciding frame by slashing the deficit to just 4 points 69-65, however what followed next was a 9-0 spurt by Madrid that proved to be a final nail in Gescrap coffin.
Sergio Rodriguez marshalled the Madrid with a game high 20 points on 3 for 3 from downtown and 7 assists.
“We played with intensity until the end; this Top 16 group is so close that nobody knows what can happen. We have to win every game by the biggest margin possible. We have to clinch a playoff spot and then we will see if we have
chances to finish first... I had a good game, but we have a lot of players that are playing well." Said Rodriguez
Ante Tomic had 15 points and 7 boards while Mirza Begic pounded 12 points on 5 for 7 from the floor. Jaycee Carroll and Kyle Singler finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Marko Banic paced the Gescrap with 18 points on 8 for 10 from the floor and 6 boards whereas Alex Mumbru registered 17 points. Kostas Vasiliadis (13) was the only other player from Gescrap who managed to end with scores in double
figures.
