Sergio Thompson pins Juan Ramon Solis to grab WBC International Silver lightweight title – Boxing News
Sergio Thompson, the former WBC FECARBOX super featherweight champion, put forth the Mexican boxing fans an impressive performance and nailed his Argentinean opponent, Juan Ramon Solis, the former WBC Latino lightweight champion, by knocking him out in the
fifth round of the 12-round bout held on May 26, 2012.
The above duo headlined the pay-per-view put forth by Jose Gomez of Cancun Boxing and the ring for the showdown was set up at Oasis Hotel Complex situated in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
The bout also had the vacant WBC International Silver lightweight title up for grabs and was co-headlined by the non-title 10-round bout between Pablo Cesar Cano and Fidel Monterrosa Munoz.
Sergio, 27, was entering in his 25th career bout and boasted 22 wins. The young Mexican proud has nailed 20 of his opponents by sheer knockout and resides within the top 20 World Boxing Organisation rankings.
In addition, Thompson, also known as the ‘Yeyo’, is well known as a quality knockout pounder who possesses a powerful jab that can even pin the best men in the division. Since his last loss to Alisher Rahimov, Sergio was on an eight-bout win streak.
Thompson recently nailed a heavily experienced opponent in his last bout that is Jorge Linares and therefore was not only confident but also possessed a clear upper hand in various significant brawling aspects.
His Saturday night opponent, Juan, 29, was entering in his 24th career bout and though has almost the same experience as that of Sergio yet possessed a bit tarnished resume. Also known as ‘Chai’, Solis has emerged victorious in a total 17 bouts
and has nailed just six men via knockout.
In addition, he was not in front of his home town crowd. All these facts combined with others shifted the odds in favour of Sergio who eventually did put forth the boxing fans an impressive show of pugilism and resilience.
Sergio started things off in an authoritative and commanding way and did not give any kind of leverage to Juan during the initial four rounds. Thompson’s jab power is evident from the fact that he flattened Solis twice, once in round one and the second time
in round four.
The continuous well targeted battering and pummelling by Sergio inflicted maximum damage to Juan. After the passage of just two minutes and 34 seconds of fifth round, Juan’s corner threw in the towel as Solis was receiving too much punishment and was almost
stunned and somewhat numb so much so that he was unable to defend his face from Sergio’s jabs.
The referee finally announced Thompson as the winner of the bout and the owner of the WBC international silver lightweight gold. This was Sergio’s 23rd career and 21st KO win whereas Solis has received his sixth career loss.
