Sergio Thompson shatters Jorge Linares dreams via technical KO win – Boxing News
In a much anticipated bout, Sergio Thompson, the current WBC FECARBOX super featherweight champion, created a huge upset and shattered the dreams of Jorge Linares, the former WBA World super featherweight champion, by collecting a swift second-round technical
knockout win hence becoming the number one contender for Antonio De Marco’s WBC lightweight gold.
The event was jointly promoted by Jose Gomez of Cancun Boxing and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and the ring for the epic March 31, 2012 showdown was stretched at Oasis Hotel Complex situated in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
From the very beginning, Jorge was the one who had the odds in his favour and not even a single individual had the slightest thought of the fact that Linares will lose. In addition, the bout, which was a title eliminator one with the winner getting a title
shot at the champion Antonio DeMarco, was considered as enough motivation for the Venezuelan since he wanted to settle his score with Antonio.
Moreover, Linares, widely known as the ‘El Nino de Oro’ or ‘Golden Boy’, outclassed Sergio by his huge and intimidating experience. Linares emerged victorious in 31 bouts out of a total 33 and collected 20 of his wins by knocking the opponent out cold.
Furthermore, the Venezuelan orthodox’s past opponents were heavily experienced as compared to Sergio’s. All these odds were altogether nullified by the Mexican who definitely made his countrymen proud by giving them a huge win.
Sergio was entering in his career’s 24th bout and boasted 21 wins. Interestingly, Sergio possessed something Linares lacked substantially, the knockout proficiency. Thompson, well known as the ‘Yeyo’, nailed 19 of his total opponents by knockout and is famous
in his hometown as one of the most lethal pounders in the lightweight division.
The bout kicked off and Sergio amid the roars and chants of his countrymen leashed a huge wave of jabs. Jorge adopted a defensive stance but all that happened later proved that he needs to work on his defensive game big time.
Sergio’s one sharp jab pierced through Jorge’s weak defence and connected leaving behind a huge wound above his left eye. A stream of blood spouted from the wound. The bout referee halted the skirmish and asked the physician to take a look at the serious
wound.
The physician called off the bout since Linares was deemed unable to continue the bout. The incident occurred after the passage of two minutes and 27 seconds of the second round. As a result of the stoppage and as per the regulatory rules, Sergio was officially
denoted as the winner via technical knockout.
With this win, Thompson has got the chance of a lifetime since now he will take on Antonio DeMarco and an impressive performance might make him the new WBC lightweight champion.
