Sergiy Garist outshines Mathias Rud in qualifying round - Hellas International 2013
Ukraine’s talented shuttler, Sergiy Garist, played flawless badminton and reserved a seat in the main round of Hellas International on Thursday, May 16, 2013. He was up against the Men's Singles shuttler, Mathias
Rud Pedersen of Denmark, and both contenders made this contest memorable by challenging each other in all three sets.
The opening game belonged to Mathias as he registered a tight yet favourable score of 24-22. However, the ending two games were dominated by Sergiy, who placed impressive results of 21-13 and 21-17 to claim victory.
The Danish campaigner showed great fighting spirit in first set to pocket this vital match point despite of remaining at lower end in most parts of the game. He played passively in the establishing rallies and
allowed the opposing shuttler to gain an early advantage. Things became worse when Mathias blundered in few back-to-back rallies just before the interval.
However, he managed to bounce back with a strong reply and amazed every one. At first, he narrowed the gap on points table and then established a decent lead in third quarter of the set. Although, Sergiy tried
hard to tip the scale in his favour, he had to surrender after reading 22-24 score on the board.
Next game started in an interesting manner, as Mathias relished full benefits of his lead in match score position and established a strong grip over game. However, his supremacy was really short lived as Sergiy
prevailed in few back-to-back rallies and turned his rival’s plans into dust.
The Ukrainian player managed to finish first half of the set with a favourable figure of 11 and then made best out of this psychological edge in latter part of the game. He maintained a significant difference
on the points table all the way to game point situation and piled up a winning total of 21-13.
The third set became consequential with this development and both contenders made every effort to claim this final match point. They chased each other throughout the decider and made the crowd gasp with a splendid
show of skills.
The nerve-racking contest finally ended when Sergiy registered a concluding margin of 21-17. With this win, he marched into main round, where Jan Frohlich will be his competitor.
