Sergiy Shatenko beats Arak Bhokanandh in qualifying round of the Yonex OCBC US Open GP Gold 2011
Talented Canadian shuttler, Sergiy Shatenko tamed England’s Arak Bhokanandh in the Men’s Singles qualifying round of the Yonex OCBC US Open GP Gold 2011, at California, USA, on Monday, July 11.
Shatenko delivered a remarkable performance and sent Bhokanandh packing after beating him in straight-sets by taking a court time of just 28 minutes. The superb show put up by the Canadian indicates that he has achieved a certain standard of skills and is
ready to put up a good show in the main round of the event.
The first set of this qualifying-round match was quite entertaining, as both shuttlers played attacking badminton in the whole game. Right from the initial points of the opening game, both players tried their best to take a comfortable lead, but failed completely
as both were playing positively.
The score progressed closely until the concluding part of this interesting opening game. The local crowd could not have asked for a more entertaining battle, as both shuttlers displayed a superb show of quality badminton. However, at the ending points of
the set, it was the Canadian who earned the winning points and clinched the set by a margin of 22-20, in 16 minutes.
Shatenko changed his tactics in the following set and started to dominate from the start of the game. He was playing with precision by hitting the bird in all areas of the court, which kept his rival guessing that where his stroke would land. Shatenko’s
speed was incredible at the net, where he played tumbling net strokes and earned an 11-7 lead at the break.
After the one-minute interval, the Canadian maintained his pace against Bhokanandh, who was playing defensively. Shatenko finished the rallies by executing strong net killings, which pushed his opponent on the back foot.
The Canadian ended the second set in striking fashion with a margin of 21-13, in just 12 minutes. This interesting qualifying round contest finished-off in 28 minutes with the victory of Shatenko, by the score of 22-20 and 21-13.
