Serie A-Player Profile: Marco Boriello
Boriello is a 28 year old professional footballer, who currently plays for A.C Milan. Marco was born in the city of Naples in Italy and started his footballing career at the Italian giants, A.C Milano. Despite impressing in his early years at the club, he spent most of his time away from his owners with lower division teams.
Early on in Marco’s career, Milan and Treviso reached an agreement according to which they have co-owned the players playing rights since then. Boriello’s first professional football game was for Triestina in the third division of Italian football also known as Serie C2. Marco scored ten goals in twenty seven third division appearances for Triestina; these goals prompted Milan to reconsider their decision to send him out on loan to the lower division club side.
Soon A.C recalled their young striker and gave him a debut against Perugia on 21 of September, 2002. However, Boriello failed to impress and therefore Milan kept him out on loan to other Serie A clubs for the next few years. In 2002-2003 season, Boriello was sent on loan to Empoli where he played 12 games and scored only a single goal. At the start of the 2003-2004 season, Milan recalled him but he only made four appearances for them before he was sent on loan to Reggina in the 2004-2005 season.
The tough Italian forward featured 30 times for Reggina but only scored two goals for them. For the 2005-2006 season, Boriello was again loaned to Sampdoria where he scored two goals in fourteen appearances. In January of 2006, Milan transferred Marco to Treviso as a part of a loan deal. At Treviso, the young center forward scored five goals in twenty games and came back to Milan for the 2006-2007 season.
Milan had sold their star striker Shevchenko to Chelsea F.C in the summer transfer window of 2006 and thus Boriello was given another chance by the Rosseneri to cement his place in their starting lineup, however Marco again disappointed as he only managed to score 3 goals for them in 14 appearances. On 21st of December 2006, Boriello tested positive for banned drug substances. This result was confirmed on in January of 2007. This mistake from the Italian forward resulted in a three month ban for him which ended on 21st of March 2007. Before the 2007-2008 season started, Boriello was sold to Genoa by Milan but the Italian giants still managed to co-own some parts of his playing contract.
While at Genoa, Boriello scored 19 goals in 37 appearances, which was his best ever tally in Italian football up till then. On 29th of May, 2008 when Alberto Gilardinho was sold by Milan to Fiorentina, Boriello returned to play for Milan again due to a ten million pound deal with Genoa. Marco had a limited number of opportunities at Milan in the 2008-2009 season, as he made only eight appearances in which he scored twice for the Milan club.
In the 2009-2010 season, the 28-year old Italian striker scored fourteen goals in 29 games. His improved tally of goals in the recently ended season, signals that the striker might be reaching his peak just at the right time. Surprisingly at 28 years old, Boriello is one of the youngest squad members at Milan where veterans like Seedorf and Nesta are plying their trade. It remains to be seen whether Boriello will spend the 2010-2011 season at Milan or somewhere else on loan.
