Serie A Special: What we learnt from round 22 matches - (Part 2)
Edinson Cavani is the best forward in Serie A
Nicknamed ‘El Matador’ by the fans, SSC http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Edinson-Cavani-c11955 has taken Serie A by storm this season. The player arrived in Italy three years ago after US Palermo spotted his talent in the 2007 South American Youth Championship.
After three years in Sicily where the forward scored34 goals in 109 league appearances, Cavani was loaned out to Champions League hopefuls, Napoli with an option to buy the player outright for 17 million Euros at the end of the season. Thirty-two appearances
and 24 stunning goals later, Partenopei are already breaking the bank to make the finances available.
With two very good feet, a great footballing brain and deadly aerial ability, Cavani is every manager’s dream. The player has scored two hat-tricks in the month of January. The manager cannot ask for more. Napoli have not lost this season whenever Cavani
has scored. Furthermore, the player is just 23 years of age, and will only get better with time.
Serie A must not lose a player’s of Cavani’s calibre if they want to snatch back their third place in UEFA coefficients. The German Bundesliga overtook the Italian Serie A in UEFA coefficients earlier this season.
Juventus will miss out on Champions League football
The Bianconeri’s terrible start to the second half of the season continued as they were humbled by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Udinese-Calcio-c40789 in Turin – Juventus’ own hunting ground. With the latest defeat, the Old Lady of Italian football dropped down to seventh place in the league
table; three points behind fourth placed Inter Milan who have a game in hand.
Granted, Luigi Del Neri has been terribly unlucky with injuries, but the Bianconeri management will have to shoulder most of the blame. The club lacked quality in defensive areas, particularly the wing back regions however, no step was taken to address the
issue. Del Neri plays a 4-4-2 formation which deploys two out-and-out wingers.
While the club bought the mercurial Milos Krasic from CSKA Moscow for 15 million Euros, Del Neri’s left flank still needed addressing. Needless to say, the club turned a blind eye to the problem and shifted central midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Claudio-Marchisio-c9312 on to the
left flank. Marchisio, for all his talents, is not a natural winger and that has shown in his performances.
As if the poor transfer campaign wasn’t enough, Lady Luck then turned the Old Lady a cruel blow. Juventus’ top scorer, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-Quagliarella-c13194, injured his knee and was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
The winter transfer market could not have come at a better time for Juventus. However, the club failed to capitalise on the opportunity. Apart from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alessandro-Matri-c4733 – even the former AC Milan youth product is not Juventus quality – the club failed to strengthen
the attack.
With 16 league games still to go, Juventus are no closer to Champions League football than they were last season. The likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lazio-c39775 and even Udinese have better squads.
