Serie A Weekend Roundup: Milan move 4 points clear at the top but Lazio slip up
Inter Milan continued their dismal form under Rafael Benitez as they slipped to fifth in the Serie A following their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chievo Verona.
Samuel Eto may be in for greater trouble as he was seen head-butting Chievo defender Bostjab Cesar in the Nerrazurris' second defeat on the trot.
The Cameroonian international is perhaps the only thing going right for the Milan giants as the defending Europeans have been woeful since Rafael Benitez took charge. Last night, a goal a piece by Pellisier and Davide Moscardelli doomed Inter to their second
defeat in as many matches with Samuel Eto grabbing a consolation for the visitors late in the game.
In another match on Sunday, two magnificent strikes by Merek Hamsik guided Napoli to third in the table as they defeated Bologna 4-1.
Christian Maggio and Edinson Cavani were the other two scorers for Napoli as Riccardo Meggiorini’s goal could only prove to be a mere consolation for Bologna.
Lazio stayed in the second spot in the league but lost further ground on AC Milan as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Parma.
Hernan Crespo gave his side the lead in the game but an own goal by a Parma defender restored the parity in the game as Lazio failed to beat their opponents on the night.
The Old Lady of Turin, Juventus moved third in the table with a 2-0 win over Genoa.
An own goal by Eduardo and a clinical Milos Krasic decided the game in favour of the Bianconerri as they moved above Roma in the table.
In another match, Sampdoria edged out Lecce 3-2 in a pulsating encounter at Stadio Via Del Mare to end Lecce's unbeaten run in the league
Giampaolo Pazzini fired Sampdoria into a 2 goal lead at the break but Lecce stormed back into the game with goals from Souleymane Diamoutene and David Di Michele in the second half but Pazzini completed his hat trick in the 88th minute to earn
his side a dramatic late victory.
In another clash at the weekend, a solitary strike by Christian Terlizzi gave Catania a 1-0 win over Bari.
With the win, Catania maintained their unbeaten streak at the Angelo Massimino stadium and despite having Maxi Lopez sent off in the game, Catania saw off the challenge from Bari.
Cagliari moved away from the relegation zone with a 2-1 victory over Brescia. Cagliari went into the match sitting just one place above bottom 3 only on goal difference and despite going a goal down early in the game, emerged victorious on the night.
Cesena, on the other hand, failed to put daylight between them and the relegation zone as they lost 2-1 to Palermo at the weekend.
Fabrizio Miccoli scored the winner on the night, just after the break as the two sides were deadlocked at 1-1 after goals from Erjon Bogdani and Ilicic.
Cesena are now only 2 points above the relegation zone while Palermo have climbed up to 7th in the Serie A table.
Earlier on Saturday, Milan moved four points clear at the top with a 1-0 win over Florentina.
Zalatan Ibrahimovic scored the only goal of the game to help his side cement their position at the top of the table.
In another match on Saturday, Roma beat Udinese 2-0 to stay within the top four of the Serie A. Jeremy Menez opened the scoring for the Romans on the night in the 24th minute and Marco Boriello sealed the win for the Giallarossi late in the second
half.
Roma had a man sent off but bravely fought off a late challenge by Udinese to stay in the Champions League positions of the Serie A table.
