Serie A: Weekend round-up
It was a weekend in Italy when the top two teams failed to win their fixtures in the Italian Serie A. However, that will haunt Lazio more, as with Milan drawing its match, it was a perfect chance for the former to close the gap on the league leaders; which
they eventually failed to achieve. Lazio also drew their match against Catania to leave the gap at the top as wide as 4 points.
The game in Rome between Lazio and Catania ended in a 1-1 stalemate with both the goals of the match scored in the first half. The first strike came through Matias Silvestre for the Catania which was followed up, almost immediately, by Hernanes’ goal for
the hosts on the stroke of half time.
Lazio could have gone to within a point of AC Milan with the Rosseneris drawing with Sampdoria 1-1 but failed to seize the initiative.
Over at the Giuseppe Meazza, Inter turned on the style as they scored 3 goals in the space of five minutes to romp to a 5-2 victory over Parma in the league.
Hernan Crespo scored inside four minutes to give Parma the lead but 2 goals from Dejan Stankovic and one from Esteban Cambiasso in the space of 5 minutes put the home side in the driving seat in the first half. Crespo reduced the arrears in the second half
but Stankovic scored another to complete his hat trick while Motta added another to guide his side to an easy win.
Also winning at the weekend were Palermo with a 3-1 win over Roma. Fabrizio Miccoli set the home side on their way with an early strike in the 20th minute and Josip Ilicic and Antonio Nocerino made the points safe in the second half as Totti’s late strike
could only prove to be a consolation for the Giallorossi.
Cagliari also notched up an impressive win in the Serie A as they held off a spirited comeback by Lecce to win a pulsation encounter 3-2.
Alessandro Matri scored twice for his side inside the first quarter of an hour while Michele Canini added another before the break to put the home team in the driving seat going into the half time break. However, two goals in second half from Ruben Olivera
and David Di Michele made sure of a pulsating final few minutes but Cagliari held on to win with a solitary goal.
A goal less draw was played between Brescia and Genoa at the Stadio Rigamonti under extreme chilly conditions and the drab affairs on the pitch failed to warm up the environment as both the sides fired blank on the night.
In another match at the weekend, Francesco Caputo salvaged a draw for his side as his goal helped Bari gain one point from their encounter against Cesena.
Earlier on Saturday, Sampdoria came from a goal down to earn a draw against AC Milan at the Sani Siro. Robinho’s early goal gave the Rosseneri an early lead in the game but Sampdoria played in an inspirational form in the second half to hold the league leaders
to only a draw.
Also on Saturday, Juventus played a 1-1 draw with Fiorentina as they failed to climb past the third spot in the league. Marco Motta scored at the wrong side of the pitch to put his side a goal down but a late goal from Simone Pepe in the 82nd minute earned
the Bianconeri a draw in the game. The results at the weekend were as follows:
