Serie A findings Round 11 – What we learned from this week’s fixtures (Part 2)
Cesena the giant killers
Newly promoted side Cesena managed to record yet another upset, this time over League leaders SS Lazio. Cesena famously inflicted a 2 – 0 defeat earlier in the season over Scudetto contenders AC Milan, arguably the biggest result in their
history.
Even though Cavallucci Marini are in the relegation zone and might even get relegated at the end of the season, their approach to the game when facing Serie A giants is to be admired. Instead of defending with 11 men behind the wall like
most sides do when facing the likes of AC Milan and Lazio, Cesena boldly take their oppositions head on.
Massimo Ficcadenti’s squad is too thin to compete with other relegation candidates and will get relegated come the end of season. However, the side deserves a stay in the Serie A solely on the back of two historic results they have produced.
No Hernanes, No Champions League!
The Aquile were finally toppled from the top berth in the Serie A rankings as Eduardo Reja’s men suffered a defeat to Cesena. Prior to the game, Lazio were the league leaders and looked good for the money run.
Hernanes, arguably the best import to peninsula this season, had been their talisman. The Brazilian had huge role in Aquile resurgence following a disastrous campaign last season having played almost every game. Eduardo Reja finally decided
to rest his jaded star and that eventually showed on the score board.
Without his creativity in the attacking third, Lazio failed to ply open a modest Cesena defence and the visitors were duly punished by the home side, Marco Parolo struck a superb winner to stun the travelling fans.
Like Palermo, Lazio’s lack of squad depth was exposed in this game. Without Hernanes, the Roman outfit will struggle to finish in the top four. Eduardo Reja must use his prized jewel with utmost care as the absence of Hernanes means no
Champions League.
Gilarossi resurgence continues
Claudio Ranieri’s side continued their dramatic rise up the table with yet another victory, this time over ACF Fiorentina. In the wake of Lupi’s disastrous start to the season, many were quick in writing off the Roman giants. Ranieri is
now making the detractors eat their words. Currently, Gilarossi stand sixth in the league, just two points off Inter Milan who occupy the last Champions League berth.
At the end of match day six, Ranieri’s team was placed 19th in the league with 5 points. Now, with eleven rounds played out, Roma stands sixth in the league. Such a turn of results is truly admirable.
Romans have registered four victories from their five last Serie A games and should Lupi manage to keep the good work up, they will easily capture a Champions League spot, maybe even a Scudetto!
