Serie A round sixteen: Tops of the game
24 goals were scored in nine league games that were played in round sixteen of Serie A. Inter Milan – Cesena was postponed in the wake of Nerazzurri’s participation in the Club world cup. We had some enthralling fixtures on our hand in the most competitive
league in the world and the likes of Roma, AC Milan and Juventus failed to disappoint.
Bettor.com now brings forth the best performers in the peninsula over the weekend.
Jean Francois Gillet (AS Bari)
The Belgian shot stopper was on the losing side when his team lined up against AS Roma on the weekend but he was the best player on the pitch. Gillet made excellent saves on Francesco Totti, Jeremy Menez and Marco Borriello and even made a stunning penalty
save on Totti in Rome.
He was extremely unlucky to be on the losing side as his side are now rock bottom of the league with just 10 points.
Alessandro Nesta (Ac Milan)
The legendary centre back produced a dominant display, not for the first time this season, and had his best friend Marco Di Vaio jingling in his back pocket. With Thiago Silva out with a knee injury and Senor Berlusconi reluctant to spend any cash in January,
Nesta will have to be on the top of his game for the rest of the season – a tough ask judging by his age but don’t bet your money against him, ever.
Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus FC)
The future of Italian national defence put in yet another inspired shift at the back. While he was as strong as ever at the back, Chiellini found time to venture forward and scored with an excellent header at the opposite end of the pitch.
Chiellini has Leonardo Bonucci playing by his side and even though Chiellini is not exactly a veteran,
Il Capitano Futuro is a positive influence on Bonucci and the two will be the foundation around which Prandelli makes his Azzurri start.
Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan)
The diminutive maestro has rediscovered some of his best form this season but Allegri has preferred more mobile options over the little genius. On Saturday however, Pirlo put in a classic ‘Pirlo’ performance full of pinpoint passes and controlled the tempo
with utmost ease.
Pirlo’s over the top pass for Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the best moment of the game and Allegri must be having headaches as to who should he start in his three man midfield.
Nene (Cagliari)
Cagliari usually rely on the finishing prowess of Alessandro Matri but on the weekend, Brazilian Nene returned to scoring ways with a sublime Hat-trick. Nene hat trick won the points for Cagliari but it was his all-round play and running off the ball that
won him the admirers.
AC Milan were reportedly interested in the Brazilian’s services over the summers and with January transfer window coming up fast, Cagliari will have a busy time rejecting proposals that are dropped over the fax machine.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (AC Milan)
The lanky Swede is the lucky charm to have if you want to win the league, any league. Zlatan has won seven league titles in his last seven years and his arrival has started a new era of Rossoneri dominance. Milan were struggling upfront last year and Zlatan’s
arrival has seen them go six points clear at the top after sixteen rounds of football.
