I keep thinking about this almost daily; everyone's panicking about gas prices, but their minds seemed to be stuck and are really thinking PRICES WILL COME DOWN, which will probably not. On the CONTRARY. For all we know most poor Americans might not drive a car anymore soon. So knowing that some people have already gotten into trouble_ including a boy or young man who kept taking his horse to school_when will U.S. government start allowing people to use these other mediums of transportation???

I can definetely think that it will all start with in the countryside, afterall rural towns are really having a tough time because of gas prices. And in most of these towns there's NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, meaning NO BUS SERVICE at all!!!

  1. Those are local and different in different state.  In Penn, they have the Amish people riding the horse carriage all over their towns.

But don't think that owning a horse is cheap.  Taking care of them is very time consuming and they eat a lot - even if you don't use them.

In Cuba when the Soviet Union fell, they were no longer getting cheap gas.  So they had to resort to horse and cow carriages (it has been this way for about 20 years).  But that is really extreme.  Don't forget they have plenty of hey.  Where would you get hey in NYC, Boston, Chicago, Los Angles, etc.

    Good Luck...

  2. It is already legal to use horses and buggies in the USA.  However, you need to place a slow moving vehicle triangle on the back of your buggy before taking it out on a public road.

  3. i used to live in a small town where people rode horses and stuff.

however im sure most interstates have laws against hitchiking, riding, mostly for safety.

its just going to depend on where you live, and how you can house an animal

  4. In Texas you still can as long as you have a place for said horse...i.e. has water, bedding, food for the day.

  5. Whether or not it is legal will depend on the local laws.  Pet owners have to clean up their pets waste in just about every town now, so I would think the  same would apply to the horse owner using the horse for transportation.  The initial cost of horse, saddle, and tack would be in the neighborhood of $3,000 depending on whether or not you would use a new saddle, and a well broke horse, plus the monthly barn and fuel (feed) costs.  You would ahve to consider the parking situation once in town.  There are not too many hitching posts anymore.  You could always use a bicycle
