Seeing the obit for Jesse Helms brings this to mind. On one of his very last campaigns, he ran an ad, playign directly to southern racial hatred, fear and paranoia, which suggested that affirmative action was rooking whites out of jobs that were rightfully theirs. I know HE'D have been at peace with slavery still being in place, being a Lester Maddox/ George Wallace/ Strom Thurmond style conservative.
What about the typical anti-Obama conservative, young and alive today, 143 years after the definitive death of slavery in the United States? Have things really improved? And is slavery so far in the past that it no longer holds fresh moral horror for us? Why are so many people comfortable with racism right now?
