What do you used in addition to wearing a swim cap, to keep your hair and skin healthy?

I recently started back swimming over this summer (after many years) and want to continue, but my hair is very dry and brittle. What products do you use? Someone mentioned Ultra Swim Shampoo, has anyone out there tried or use this product?

Also, I have locks (dreads) which are also color treated, so that's not helping either....

Thanks in advance for all your help and information. Cheers

  1. The most important thing for healthy hair is to make sure it absorbs as little chlorine as possible when your swimming.

Thoroughily rinse your hair with tap water before swimming because if it has already absorbed clean water it won't absorb as much pool water. After your done swimming you should wash and condition your hair with hydrating shampoo and conditioner and moisturize your skin right away after. I really like dove shampoo and conditioner(find the one for your hair type)

Personally, I find that Ultra Swim is c**p and if your hair is colour treated it can mess with the colour.

You might also want to consider getting a silicone swim cap instead of a latex one because I find they're better for your hair and more comfortable too.

Another thing you could try to really moisturize and repair your hair is to wet your hair apply conditioner, put on your silicone cap and go swimming with the conditioner in your hair. Rinse it out after practice.

Hope I helped and good luck in your swimming! :)

  2. I have used Ultra swim shampoo for years, years ago.  I recommend rinsing your hair after each swim.  Also do a weekly oil treatment to remoisturize your hair.  I recommend jojoba oil.  I also used to used eggs, and seltzer water to help.  I think the combo did help.  My haircolor did bleach out though.  I have noticed that alot of the American Olympic team have good color so I am not sure what todays athletes use.

  3. This could get complicated with locks, I haven't know too many swimmers with locks but I have known a few and they always say keeping their hair chlorine-free is a real challenge; a cap helps somewhat but if your hair gets wet the chlorine is going to stay in them probably until you get them undone if they're really dense.

I have used the Ultra Swim shampoo before and for my short male hair it worked very well but for locks you might have to use a large amount of it every time you get your hair wet. If I were you I would just get rid of the locks, they're just too cumbersome to have if you're a swimmer. Even just undoing them and having really long hair would probably be better than having locks because the chlorine-cleansing shampoo could get to all of your hair and not just some of it.

  4. our hair dresser gave ( accually we bought it becuase my sister is a lifeguard and I'm on a swim team) us stuff called swimmers action . now my sister got this stuff called ion and it works well on my hair but i don't have locks or anything. maybe try washing your hair twice once at the pool and once when yu get home.
