so here is the deal my friend and I want to relocate to NYC in a few months. I can transfer out there with my job and have an ok living on a 35000yr salary. The problem is that my friend is older and has student loan payments every month and she is afraid that she will not be able to make rent when she movies out. I told her that she needs to save some money and move out In the mean time I told her to work on her resume and send it out to places in nyc. She has a fine arts degree from a design school and she did her internship in NYC. She is afraid and does not even want to start looking for things until she has money saved. Does anyone who has moved to NYC have any advice on how much she would need to make or any advice on how I can convince her to just do it. She wants to really bad and has been wanting to for a couple of years now.

Her loan payments are between $700-$1000 a month. If she waits to pay them off it will be another 10 years.

  1. I know she's your friend but it will be a bad move.  Those loans need to paid off or close to being paid off.   Sorry to say it but I'm giving you advise from an outside person looking in.

    Good luck and God bless.

  2. Depending where you want to live, are you both going to rent or share?

depends on how much she makes a year as well

35000 can hardly support one person living in NYC PER YEAR.

unless you live in the bronx or booklyn or something.

In Queens rent is about 1000 a month give or take afew hundred.

    Save money till you're ready.

Also people are getting laid off really quick here, so you might want to wait alittle before you come.
