Question:

Serious question: I hate the DVRs that come with DirectTV and Comcast. What system will allow me to use TiVo?

I don't even mind paying for it myself.

My biggest complaint about Comcast is that the program search function only lists about 1/2 of the shows that are available. Other than that it is fine.

PS Is the user interface with Dish Network any better?

  1. TiVo is the best ,dishnet is a very close second, if you gotta have tivo you can buy a used direct/tivo box off eBay or ?. you ll have to hire an independent retailer to install it if you cant. you ll spend about $100.00 for this but you ll be able to have a no commitment account (assuming you qualify, a mid range credit score will be OK) you can have dish or direct w/ regular tivo on it but it has to be connected to a phone line and cost 14-16 bucks a month for tivo service, the bad part is that sometimes the sat on screen guide conflicts w the tivo guide, messing up recording schedule. dish programing is cheaper

  2. That's just silly.  Those things don't exist.

I gave you that black and white tv and am radio--that's enough for now.

  3. I can't speak for dish, but with Tivo you can use regular cable service (and HD with an HD Tivo, but that does NOT support two-way stuff like movies on demand, etc.)

You can just buy a Series 2 Tivo and plug it into your video source where it goes into your TV. If you have satellite you have to put downstream of the decoder box (think of Tivo like a VCR).

The Tivo search lets you check all programs appearing on your system within the next two weeks, but it does only go two weeks out. It downloads program updates through either a phone line or broadband internet connection every night.

    Hope that answers your question.

  4. Dish Network DVR is the best. The user interface is very friendly and organized. The search is very comprehensive, and all the shows come up. You can even search by information.

  5. I have not tried Dish, but I own three TiVos. Just to let you know the TiVo series 3 and HD ONLY work with cable or antenna. If you currently have satellite then you will have to get a series 2. The only drawback to that is the series 2 is not HD.
