Serious road bike for a beginner? What type of bike should I get?

I'm an experienced mountain biker and would like to get into street cycling. I dont know a whole lot about road bikes and I would like to purchase one. What bike would be good for a beginner looking to get into some serious street cycling (affordability is also important).

I'd definitely recommend a lower end Eclipse racing/road bike if you're just looking to get into street cycling.  When I switched over from trail riding to streets that was the advice given to me from my local shops, plus I had a mountain bike from the same company.

I'm on my 2nd racing bike from Eclipse and can't say a bad thing about them.  I started with an Evolution Road Sport Road Sora 27 which cost around $700, and these days I use a Evolution Carbon Wish Bone Road 105 27, which set me back around $1200

Go to your local bike shop and tell them what you are interested in. If they are a good shop, they'll explain the differences between the various road bikes and what more money gets you.

Most important is getting a bike that fits you and feels right when you ride it. A good shop will let you do a test ride to see how a bike feels.

Don't get too hung up on brand name. All of the better known manufacturers make reliable bikes. The most important is a good bike shop who will offer guidance and a good fit.

First determine how much you want to spend for a bike. Then what material and secondly the accesories. If you are planning on getting not that serious (just put on some road miles) you can start within the $1,000 margin and you can go up to $1,500 (ussually Shimano 105 ). For a beginner or cassual riding i wouldnt go over $1500. Primarly go with renowend brands; trek, specialized, giant etc. These ussually offer the best bike for the money (as in MTBs).  Im a full time road cyclist but hit the dirt once in a while and these are the road bikes that my dirt buddies have.

Their are many different companies that sell a good road bike. The first thing you need to consider is how much can you afford. Entry level good quality road bikes can be had for around $600 give or take. They will usually be running Shimano Sora components.  My advice is to try to get Tiagra shifters instead or even better, 105s. Jamis, Fuji, Felt, and Performance Bike's house brand Scattante bikes ( to name a few but there are more) are good value bike names. When you find what you like make sure you like the ride by test riding it first. Not just in the bike shop parking lot but around the block a few times. Also, the key to truly enjoying cycling is getting fitted on your road rig. If you're not properly fitted, nothing else matters. You might have a great bike that's uncomfortable. A bike should fit you like a finely tailored suit. It will fit your posture without compromises. Good luck on your shopping and try to have fun with it.
