  1. What city are you in?

  2. I was in the same situation, totally lost and no idea what to do.  Try http://www.weddingwire.com that helped me a ton to figure out where to start.  I also made Excel spreadsheets to organize my guest lists and invitations.   After a bit it was easy and I knew what to do.

  3. There must be someone you know who would be thrilled to help with the wedding. It might be your mother, a sister, or a friend. Start telling everyone you know that you're engaged, and most women will start offering to help. Then take them up on their offers.

  4. First thing that you need to do is figure out your budget. Once you have that in place figure out how many guests you are going to invite. The more people you have at the wedding the more expensive it will be.

After you know what your price range and capacity are you can start looking for places to hold the ceremony and reception.

Start from there. Once you have the ceremony and reception venue reserved then you can start working on other things like flowers, cake, food, photographer, etc.

I know that it seems overwhelming at first. But just do one thing at a time...and stay organized. I recommend getting a binder and dividing it up into the follow sections:

    Ceremony/Officiant

    Reception

Catering (if reception venue does not provide the food)

    Rehearsal Dinner

    Photographer

    DJ/Music

    Flowers/Decor

    Cake

    Transportation

    Attire

    Hair/Makeup

    Honeymoon

    Guest List

    Budget

    Misc (wedding favors, etc)

  5. I planned our wedding entirely by myself, I looked around for ideas off the internet and used theknot.com it helped tremendously. Honestly I was happy doing it all by myself because I got to ensure everything was done the way I wanted it done. I used am using non-traditional wedding songs for all of the big dances and going down the isle. I am doing a different kind of cake but it is still beautiful and we are getting married on a little piece of land right by the water, while the guests watch from balconies...and I made all of our wedding favors by myself. Honestly do what makes you happy, if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me. I really loved planning our wedding.

  6. Martha Stewart Weddings will be your best friend. Buy the most recent magazine edition. Also, check out their website, it seems to be down today. You could probably look for event planners at the local college (many schools now offer event planning degrees, and most students would be happy to add your event to their resume)...

Also, theknot.com and weddingchannel.com offer some great tips, tricks and tools for managing your wedding.

Good luck - if you need more advice, let me know and I will happily help you (free of charge - have been planning weddings for friends and family since high school)....

  7. If you need help planning a wedding, even a small wedding, consider hiring a professional wedding consultant. You'll be sure to get someone who is available to you when you need her and since you;re paying her she will want to help you plan your perfect day. otherwise, you'll have to ask friends or family members or get yourself some books. Friends and family aren't always the best choice since they will have their own opinions and they may not be available to you when you need them.

  8. First, pick a date.  That will help you get a feel for the "theme" (ie. colors, decorations, location, etc).  Next, search for a location, since this is really the most important thing to get booked.  Next, pick colors.  This can then dictate bridesmaids dresses, flowers, and all other decor.  After this, all the rest should come together.  Look for invites, cake ideas, dj, etc.  theknot.com has lists of everything you may need/want to have.

Good luck.  It's not as overwhelming as it seems once you get started.
