Question:

Seriously, why aren't the people in Australia upside down?

Australia is at the bottom of the globe, and so surely they should be all upside down? But they're not?

Why?

Does that even make sense?

If it does I'd appreciate answers please :)

  1. Who told you they aren´t .....Have you seen this ?http://www.satirewire.com/news/jan02/aus...

If you´re NOT serious, I think I can understand you ...

  2. I know you wrote 'seriously' but seriously, are you serious?

Which I guess answers your other question, no, your question doesn't make any sense.

Edit:- okay - if you're serious, then the answer is as others have put it ... there is no up or down on the earth.  Think of a basketball, there really isn't an up or down to it, & the earth is the same.  I live in Australia, & the way we see it here is that we're on the top & you're down below ;-) ...

  3. Gravity plus earths rotation.

  4. There is no 'up' or 'down' in space. Since globes of the Earth were first made in Europe, it's only natural that the Northern hemisphere would be portrayed 'upright'. It could just have easily have been the other way round, in which case you would be living now on the 'bottom' of the earth.

  5. they are.  Or we are relative to them.  At least that is how it would seem if you could see them and us from outer space.

  6. No, they're not upside down. Australia is not at the bottom of the globe. The earth is a sphere, so there is no up or down. If you're thinking of it as "top/bottom" or "up/down" then the place gravity is pulling us to is the "bottom" so the center of the earth is the bottom. To think that Australians are upside down is pretty naiive. (No offence).

  7. 'Upside-down' is a relative term, depending on where you are. When compared to people in the Northern Hemisphere, people in Australia and other Southern nations are indeed upside down, but only when compared person-to-person. When compared to the Earth, they are the correct way up, because on Earth, 'down' is always towards the centre, because gravity 'pulls' us towards that point. Fly to Australia and you'll see that throughout the journey, gravity kept you the right way up ;-)

  8. No, people in North America are upside down!

We are living  and walking on the surface of a sphere.  The sphere is so big that around you it looks flat. That's why we think we live on the surface of a table.  In a place like Iowa, which very flat, you think that you live in a flat surface.

This illusion makes you believe that people living on the other side are upside down.
