  1. Without knowing if you live in a house, townhouse, condo or apartment, how far your nearest neighbor is, what your walls are made out of, and other factors, it's impossible to give you an accurate answer.

If you're in a standard detached house - meaning you don't share any walls, floor or ceiling with a neighbor, it's always a possibility that they could hear your stereo if you turned it all the way up, opened the windows, and pointed the speakers their way.

Most people don't need their music set so loud though.  Also, this is why many people do things like hang heavy curtains in their theater room, or better yet, turn a room in the basement into their theater.  No worries about neighbors then, even if you turned the system to its max.  Of course, I think you'd start having blood spewing from your ears by that time.

In any event, common sense and courtesy are your best options.  Even if your neighbors won't be able to hear your music, even a cheap system will be able to rattle the windows around the house - something I don't think your mom will enjoy.  And if it's between 9pm and 9am - especially on a weekday - forget about cranking the stereo up altogether.

Trust me, there's nothing more annoying than having an idiot neighbor who likes turning his surround system up to "11" even while watching CNN, causing all the windows to rattle in the whole apartment complex by "THIS ....IS.....CNN" at 6am every day.  I swear the idiot was deaf, because I couldn't even walk down his hall without having to clamp my hands over my ears.

  2. That music is c**p man, at least p**s your neighbors off with something good...
