I work for a nicer restaurant and the boss thinks that its ok to put tips in a seperate jar for each waitress, my question is , is it ok to ask him to keep tips with the ticket it came from so I know where and how much tip was. I just want to know if I got a good tip from a table or if I got a bad tip so I can figure out what I did wrong and improve myself( not that I dont give 100% to every customer)But you server know what I'm talking about right

  1. I have worked in a few nice restaurants and I have NEVER had my tips put into a jar.  In every restaurant that I worked at we kept our tickets and money with us until we cashed out.  Seems fishy to me.  But, it wouldn't hurt to ask as it would be better in customer satisfaction.

  2. It wouldn't hurt to ASK him. He should be happy that you want to improve service--that reflects well on him in the long run!

    Great idea!

  3. I'm just a paying customer but if the restraunt puts a charge on my bill for a tip, there's nothing that says I have to pay it.

I tip according to the service my waitress gives me. When presented with the bill I refuse to pay the tip that's on the bill and instead give the amount I think the waitress earned to her in cash.

  4. The tips really should not be going through the management at all, as soon as they do they become taxable income and need to be declared. often it is not possible to point this out with out rocking the boat, especially if it has been done this way long before you got there.

But you should be able to see for yourself how much people are leaving when you collect payment for the bills? If this is not possible (ie another server always does this task) then ask them, get the conversation going so everyone is open about how much they make in tips. Remember that money is yours and if you really wanted to kick up a stink about it then you can demand all tips be handed directly to you as soon as they are left.

        Do not do that though!
