Question:

Service Engine Soon Light...what to do?

About a week ago the SES light on my 2000 Chevy Lumina turned on. Three days later it turned off, before it did so though I made a call to my local Chevy dealership who wanted $93 for a "driveability" diagnostic, to figure out why it had turned on. It is now on again, I really do not want to pay $93, is that a normal fee for checking why the SES light is on? Know of anyplace free? (Around Portland, OR)

  1. it,s probably telling you it,s about time for a complete tune-up.

  2. 93.00 is a fair price for a diagnostic. You can get autozone or one of those places to check it for free but all they do is pull the code and sell you stuff that doesn't fix it. I have people come in my shop everyday with o2 sensors and say autozone diagnosed bad sensors, how much to install. I smile and gladly take their money knowing it was misdiagnosed. As far as anyone doing free diags, I know of none. If shops worked for free, there would be no need to be in business. We charge 89.00 at my shop so 93 is surely in the ballpark.

  3. Its a standard fee, they plug into your computer and it tells you exactly why the car flicked the light. Then the money for the repairs. Check some basic things, gas cap, wires unplug, leaking oils.

  4. service engine means a lot so service it...never go to dealer for anything really they will be the highest place with less knowledge of finding the problem.. and autozone will scan it for free and any shop can service for half of what they going to charge you at dealer.. and anytime you get any light it means stop what your doing and start checking... so when was the last time you had work done on it.. oil filters tune up .. first thing you do when a light comes on is check what light it is like oil light come on you check oil and so on... take it to any shop and say you need it service and let the dealers sell cars...
