Services for people with special needs?

I live in south carolina and I am looking for an agency that will provide services to my diabled child in my home. I know there must be some community based programs where staff can help my child in my home a few hours a day. Does anyone know of any agency's that do this??

Each state is different with the services to the disabled. I would contact your Department of Social Services to see what services are available in the state. If your child is in school your case manager maybe able to send you in correct direction. Your county might have services for the disabled.

From my experience, there are limited services that would come to the home for respite services daily. Typically if a person is accepted into the services they are allotted so much timer per month. For some families it can be 20 hours or as little as 10 per month.  This also depends on the persons disabilities and the states services.

I am a special education teacher in SC and have found the following 2 resources helpful.  Depending on the age of your child, you may find Babynet helpful.  They serve children under age 3.  Family Connection is another good resource for helping children with disabilities.

There some wonderful companies in your community that will provide care for your child. I would check with your CaseWorker or Community Services Board and see if they can suggest some places.

I know as a worker who used to go to the home of a child who is disabled, they don't earn a lot of money. I'm not saying to hire someone on your own to care for your child, but be supportive and loving towards the worker that is provided. Welcome them into your family like they are one of your own. This is because they care for your child - you would want them to take care of him/her like they were their own, right?

It's a great job to have, working with special needs children/adults. Very gratifying.
