Serving help anybody? =/

So I am a freshman on my JV volleyball team.

In middle school I practiced overhand but in games served underhand because my overhand wasn't good.

Now in high school I have to learn to serve overhand.

I keep trying but something isn't right.

My newer coach told me I'm not hitting it hard, like I don't care.

I am SO far from not caring. I worry about it all the time.

My other coach who knows me way better and has coached me before thinks it's mental. [It usually is with me. My dad also thinks it's mental. Keep in mind, I'm a perfectionist when it comes to sports and I can get quite down on myself, unfortunately. I know, it's not good.]

Basiacally, I have a scrimmage Saturday and I need to get this down.

Any tips?

Physical, especially.

  1. okay... the way to stop this coach from thinking you dont care is to ask her for extra help.  go up to her and say hey coach, would you mind working with me on my serve?

when i first started serving, i was using my upper body only... and i have pretty buff arms so i didnt get why it wouldnt go over...

but then i started feeling the power come from my toes and i let the energy surge up through my arm it improved by like 923476267230596 percent.

u have to encompass your entire body when you serve, and a lot of times coaches dont teach that.

try to use your whole body and practice practice practice (:

  2. haha okay serving is a very tough thing to do, and it took me FOREVER to finally be able to do it the "right way" , so i definatly know where your coming from....here are some tips that i actually found extremely important and useful while learning how to get it over and just plain serve well.............

NEVER stand straight facing the court, angle yourself 45 degrees to the right

NEVER put extra steps into your serve, just step and drag, thats it

ALWAYS keep you hips, shoulder, arm, and hand OPEN!!!

NEVER try to just hit it as hard as you can, take time on checking your form, opening up and swinging through the ball

ALWAYS try to think about what your doing and where you want the ball to go

ALWAYS be positive and tell yourself "i can do it"

ALWAYS ask yourself "what went wrong" if you miss a serve or it does not go where you want it to go

***hope i helped and good luck with the serving!!!

  3. practice all u can before saturday!!!! over and over again!!! but mayb u arent throwing it high enuf.... or hitting it square in the middle..... or mayb u arent following threw..... theres an unlimited number of possibilities... so if u practice hard you'll get it

  4. practice practice practice

i had the hardest time as a freshman. i never served over hand. i couldnt get it over the net. took me three years to figure out what was wrong - my angle. most girls have the habit - right before the toss the ball up - of simply raising their right hand and making a 90 degree angle right away. bringing your elbow back first instead gives you more power and accuracy. it helped me a lot.

so, do this with your elbow:

    not this:

its weird and difficult at first you will just need to practice at it and it really helps.
