Question:

Serving jury duty in college location after graduation?

I deferred my jury duty from Massachusetts (where I am a college senior) until September 08.

I am a resident of N.H. but was summoned b/c I live in Mass. the majority of the year.

However, I will graduate in May and move back home to N.H.

Will I still be expected to do my jury duty 3 months later in Mass. even though I'm not a "resident" anymore?

  1. If you somehow get an MA jury summons delivered to you in NH, there should be an option on the summons for informing the MA clerk that you're no longer a resident of that county in MA, which --unless you're lying-- is a valid justification for not showing up at the court for potential jury duty.

  2. Inform the court of your transfer so that you will not be required to serve the jury duty.

  3. Call the jury office and tell them you no longer live there. Explain that you recently moved. They'll drop you from the roles.

The exact same thing happened to me when I moved after graduation (except with different states.) It will be a matter of a phone call of under five minutes.
