Question:

Serving overhand in volleyball ..?

in order to make at least the freshman volleyball team, let alone JV, i need to be able to make an overhand serve.

i'm good at everything else, but overhand is so hard!

i practice at home and it gets so frustrating; i get on the verge of crying!

i'm not weak, and i constantly mess up.

i REALLY want to make the team.

what do i need to do to get better at serving?

i have untill august, about a month away, untill tryouts. i have trainings, but they don't cater to me specifically, so i wouldn't have much time to train with the coaches just for me.

  1. A few rules you need to know.....serving overhand is all about the transfer of weight from your back leg to your front leg while serving.  Learn to hit the ball with the palm of your hand. Hit thru the middle of the ball. When tossing the ball in the air make sure as you are going thru you swing to concentrate on the shifting of weight from that back leg into the front leg this plus solid contact will lead you to serving better. (overhand)

You can also use thera bands and tie it to a wall and work on your arm speed and your Tri ceps.....lots of power comes from that muscle.

Good Luck and keep trying.....it is always easier to quit....it takes hard work to achieve succes.

  2. once u get the hang of it....its super easy!.......i was taught the bow and arrow way. take the ball in ur left hand and hold it out like u r holding a plate of food. put ur right hand on top of it and then pull ur arm back so that it is parallel with ur eye. toss the ball straight up in the air (dont let it roll off ur fingers!!... wen u toss it up it should have minimal to no spin)take 1 step forward (if needed) and smack it at the highest point u can reach. also....when u hit the ball...make sure u dont have the "barbie hand".....i.e dont keep ur fingers together, keep them spread apart so u hit as much of the ball as u can!.....good luck at try outs in august!...i have tryouts in august too!!!

  3. OMG same here with the tryouts but my overhands pretty good...the most important thing is the toss, u have to get the perfect toss that lands right next to ur left foot if ur a rightie. make sure to step in when ur about to hit it and hit itt with urr whole hand not just ur palm...AND PRACTICEEE!!

    hope i helped♥♥

  4. yeah. I had that same problem and know what you are feeling. I took me a while before I could overhand serve. What my coaches taught me was, to keep my arm straight, not sloppy. Make sure you toss the ball in front of you and not behind. And also arch your back a little. Thats how it worked for me. Just keep on practicing and you'll make it. Good Luck!!

Also what we did was, that we would stand at the net, serve the ball five times, and then move back two steps. Do that until you get to the end of the line. it might give you some help.

Or you could face the wall standing at a certain distance and hit the ball pretending that you were serving. and practice how hard you hit.

  5. make sure your doing everything right. well thats a no brainer, lol.

anyways, are you facing where you want to hit the ball?

are you throwing it up high enough?

are you throughing it up with your opposite hand you hit it with, but if you are like me i through it up with the same hand.

do you hit it at the right place when it is in the air?

you should hit it not on the bottom and not on the side but where they meet. ya know?

and make sure your feeting is right,

i'm sorry that you have tryouts. i go to such a small school that if you show up for practice you automatically play on the team.  so yeah. i'm sorry.

  6. The most important thing is your toss. You want the ball to be no more then about 3 feet above your head end directly in front of you...anything more and you "lose" track of the ball so to speak...

When you go to hit the ball you are going to step with your foot as you hit the ball and follow all the way through. Your follow through is really important.

Start by serving the ball over the net from about the 10 foot line and after you make it over consistently then take a step back and so on and so forth until you are at the end line.

  7. Try to watch other people who are good at it do it, and then try  mimicking them.  For instance, look up some videos on YouTube.  It might help.

    And most importantly, practice!

  8. try using ur fist... but watch out sometimes it don't work... i always get good serves with my fist but my brother in law said its bad to  serve with ur fist cause its takes the ball to the wrong direction but keep praticing the fist.. the first 3 time i did fist it did go bad but practicing helped... GOOD LUCK!!!!!  u have to try out for volleyball??? i wish we did.!!! that sucks!!

  9. when you start serving overhand in volleyball it's easier to start with your hand in a fist and punch the ball you can not conrol the direction but as you keep serving that way your arm gets stronger and you can start hitting the ball open  handed

  10. I agree with volleyball but also made sure the ball is in the same place when you hit it. If you still have problems you may try a sidearm serve. Good luck!
